New Mitsubishi Outlander Sport HEV Coming to NZ in 2026
Mitsubishi’s electrified vehicle range is growing, with an exciting new compact SUV heading our way in 2026 – the all-new Mitsubishi Outlander Sport HEV.
Scheduled to arrive in New Zealand in the third quarter of 2026, the Outlander Sport will be Mitsubishi’s first hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) offered in New Zealand. It gives Christchurch drivers another way to enjoy the efficiency and smooth driving experience of an electrified vehicle, without needing to plug in.
Mitsubishi’s First HEV for New Zealand
Mitsubishi is already well known for plug-in hybrid technology thanks to the success of the Outlander PHEV. The new Outlander Sport takes a different approach.
Rather than plugging the vehicle in to recharge, its hybrid system manages everything automatically as you drive.
The Outlander Sport HEV combines a 1.6-litre MIVEC petrol engine with Mitsubishi’s latest-generation hybrid technology. The system can automatically switch between EV, hybrid and engine drive modes depending on driving conditions and battery charge.
Regenerative braking also helps recover energy while driving, which is then used by the hybrid system to help reduce fuel consumption.
For drivers who like the idea of an electrified vehicle but aren’t ready for a PHEV or fully electric vehicle, the Outlander Sport HEV could provide an appealing middle ground.
Mitsubishi Outlander Sport HEV Coming to Christchurch
The Outlander Sport is a compact SUV, making it well suited to everyday driving around Christchurch while retaining the ground clearance and versatility you’d expect from a Mitsubishi.
With 212mm of ground clearance and selectable Normal, Wet, Gravel and Mud drive modes, the Outlander Sport is designed for more than sealed city streets.
Whether you’re commuting across Christchurch during the week, heading out onto Canterbury’s rural roads or loading up for a weekend away, it’s designed to adapt to a variety of New Zealand driving conditions.
Mitsubishi has also focused on ride comfort, body rigidity and weight distribution to create a composed driving experience across different road surfaces.
Technology Inside the Outlander Sport
Inside, the Outlander Sport combines a spacious cabin with the technology expected from a new-generation Mitsubishi.
A 12.3-inch display system features wireless smartphone connectivity, while the digital driver display provides information about the hybrid system, including energy flow, regenerative braking and the proportion of your journey completed using electric drive.
An expansive panoramic glass roof will also be standard across the New Zealand range, helping create a light and spacious cabin.
Depending on specification, Yamaha-tuned premium audio will also be available.
Safety Comes Standard
The Outlander Sport HEV will arrive with a comprehensive suite of driver assistance and safety technology.
Features across the range include Adaptive Cruise Control, Forward Collision Mitigation, Blind Spot Warning, Rear Cross Traffic Alert and Leading Car Departure Notification.
VRX models add a Multi Around View Monitor and Moving Object Detection for additional visibility around the vehicle.
Where Does the Outlander Sport Fit in the Mitsubishi Range?
Despite its name, the Outlander Sport isn’t replacing the Mitsubishi ASX.
Mitsubishi has confirmed that the ASX will remain an important part of its New Zealand line-up, with the Outlander Sport sitting alongside it as another option within the compact SUV segment.
It also gives customers another choice within Mitsubishi’s growing electrified range. Drivers will be able to consider a traditional petrol vehicle, the new self-charging Outlander Sport HEV, the plug-in hybrid Outlander PHEV, and future Mitsubishi electric vehicles depending on what best suits their driving.
When Will the Outlander Sport HEV Arrive in Christchurch?
The Mitsubishi Outlander Sport HEV is scheduled to arrive in New Zealand in Q3 2026. Full New Zealand specifications and pricing will be announced closer to launch.
We’re looking forward to welcoming the Outlander Sport HEV to Christchurch Mitsubishi and giving Canterbury drivers the opportunity to experience Mitsubishi’s newest hybrid technology for themselves.
Keep an eye on Christchurch Mitsubishi for the latest Outlander Sport HEV news, pricing and availability as we get closer to its New Zealand launch.
