All-new Mitsubishi Pajero pricing announced
The legendary Pajero is returning to New Zealand, bringing seven-seat versatility, serious four-wheel-drive capability and a high level of comfort to the top of the Mitsubishi SUV range.
Mitsubishi Motors New Zealand has confirmed pricing and full specification for two models: the Pajero VRX, with an RSP of $79,990 +ORC, and the range-topping Pajero Exceed, with an RSP of $86,990 +ORC.
For Christchurch drivers looking for a family SUV that can also tow the boat or caravan and head beyond the sealed road, the new Pajero brings a familiar name into a new generation. Both models are scheduled to arrive in Mitsubishi dealerships nationwide in December 2026.
A proven reputation
Pajero was first introduced globally in 1982. Across four generations, more than 3.2 million vehicles were produced and sold in over 170 countries and regions.
That history spans more than four decades and has helped establish Mitsubishi’s reputation for four-wheel-drive capability, both internationally and here in New Zealand.
MMNZ Chief Operating Officer Tony Johnston says the response to Pajero’s return shows how much the name still means to Kiwi motorists. During local testing around Wellington, pre-production vehicles have attracted people wanting to take photos and videos, ask questions and look inside.
That enthusiasm is also reflected in strong pre-orders reported by Mitsubishi dealers around the country ahead of the new model’s arrival.
Off-road evolution
The new Pajero is powered by a Mitsubishi-developed 2.4-litre Gen2 turbo-diesel engine producing 150kW and 480Nm.
A single variable-geometry turbocharger works with a new-generation eight-speed automatic transmission, developed to handle the increased torque while improving efficiency and drivability.
Every Pajero is rated to tow up to 3.5 tonnes. Underneath, a heavy-duty, high-rigidity ladder frame is paired with high-mount double-wishbone front suspension and five-link solid-axle rear suspension.
Mitsubishi’s Super All-Wheel Control (S-AWC) works alongside the proven Super Select 4WD-II system. S-AWC integrates control of acceleration, cornering and braking to deliver precise, predictable vehicle behaviour.
Super Select 4WD-II offers four drivetrain settings: 2H, 4H, 4HLc and low-range 4LLc. These provide options for everyday driving through to demanding off-road terrain.
Seven selectable drive modes further tailor the vehicle to different conditions: Normal, Eco, Gravel, Snow, Mud, Sand and Rock. A manually selectable rear differential lock adds traction when the terrain becomes particularly challenging.
Johnston says that versatility remains central to Pajero: carrying the family, towing the boat or caravan and travelling well beyond the open road.
The legendary look, reimagined
Pajero’s connection to its predecessors extends beyond its off-road ability.
A tall, squared-off stance and strong horizontal lines reference earlier generations, with familiar design cues given a contemporary interpretation.
Inside, the horizontal instrument panel takes inspiration from the first-generation Pajero. An expansive digital multi-meter display reimagines the distinctive triple meters found in historic models.
The display can show dedicated off-road and general driving information, including altitude, compass heading, temperature and vehicle pitch and roll angles.
Measuring 4,920mm long and 1,925mm wide, with a 2,870mm wheelbase, the new Pajero offers three rows of seating for seven occupants and the space expected of Mitsubishi’s flagship SUV.

Three new Mitsubishis before Christmas
Pajero’s arrival follows the introduction of the new Outlander Sport HEV and all-electric ASX VR-e.
Together, these three models broaden the Mitsubishi range across hybrid, fully electric and off-road diesel powertrains before Christmas, offering different options for different Kiwi lifestyles.
For MMNZ, Pajero has a particularly significant place in that line-up, combining its role as the flagship SUV with a name deeply connected to Mitsubishi’s heritage.
